IN THE NEWS

Summaries, pictures, and web links for news and events in the whitewater boating world will be placed here...send me anything you want to put up on this page. Again, due to lack of feedback on this blog events are updated on Facebook page Riverchics, this remains a great reference for the moment.

There is a new topic blog if you want events or runs added, I can make some extra blogs for other region's run planning.

Since her words captures an essence of the attraction of whitewater on the rivers, I posted it as a heading; immediately after this, news reports are updated frequently.

In Her Own Words: Sheri Griffith

Sixty and still rowing strong: Griffith getting ready for another trip on the river.

Rivers are where magic moments happen. They create a sense of wonder. You never really know what’s around the next bend, even if you’ve been there a hundred times..."

Sheri Griffith, founder of Moab, Utah, rafting outfitter Sheri Griffith Expeditions, is celebrating more than 30 years of getting people out into the wilderness, which she cherishes as her company’s most important role. But her own role in the industry has been even bigger, from establishing one of the country’s first river guide training programs to testifying in D.C. to preserve our nation’s wild places. We caught up with her -- 60 and single save for her dogs and four horses – for a peak inside the paddling pioneer...

31st Annual Upper Clackamas Whitewater Festival

May 17 & 18th, 2014

The Upper Clackamas Whitewater Festival was first held in 1984 by an informal group of rafters calling them selves the "Oregon River Rats." Planned by Russ Snively and friends with the support of volunteers from the Northwest Rafters Association, the "River Rats" were determined to challenge each other to a contest of skill running a race through the Carter Falls section of the Upper Clackamas River east of Estacada, Oregon.
It's a weekend of fun, exciting, and safe whitewater activities.  This year's festival marks the 31st anniversary of this great tribal gathering.
The festival gathers boaters together for a rip roaring good time doing what we all love to do: raft and kayak! The goal of the annual Upper Clackamas Whitewater Festival is to provide you with a place to learn, to challenge, to bond and simply spend a GREAT weekend with your fellow boaters. Please consider volunteering for the festival!

12/24/13   --   OKCC has just released some of their class schedules for 2014, please visit the link below.

http://www.okcc.org/classes/

Below is a posting by Alder Creek regarding their upcoming classes for 2014, contact info at the bottom.

I hope everyone is getting ready for some holiday huckin!  Get out there and have some fun before the 2013 season comes to a close. Then, start the year off right with some MORE boating of course!!!

Be on the look out for some NEW whitewater programs offered by Alder Creek this year.

Check them out below and have a HAPPY Holiday (whatever it is you celebrate)

This class is a really good 1 day brush up for people that have been paddling with the club or friends for a year or two. Perhaps you have been running harder and harder rivers, but swimming more than you want and are still feeling sloppy and tired at the end of the day?  We will be paddling a local class III river and working ALL the hard moves.  Challenges will be taken on by choice and will be relatively low risk but quite demanding.  We will be working the river hard all day so get ready for some serious fun with a sweet 4:1 ratio
Click the link for more info…

Creek Boating Basics:     Feb 22-23rd, 2014
This class is for the aspiring creek boater.  The Pacific Northwest is THE creek boat Mecca of North America. Come and experience some of the best rapids in the world and the raw beauty of the Cascade Mountains with our top level coaches.  (3:1 student to coach ratio!!)
Day 1: Class III river (Washougal, Bull Run, N. Santiam)
Day 2 : Class IV river (Molalla, East Fork Lewis, June CreekJordan Creek, etc)
A combat roll is required. Comfort on class 3 is also a necessity.
We will establish a team dynamic and asses the students on day 1 paddling solid class III while laying some ground work and foundational skills.
On day 2 we find some small volume class III-IV stuff to work on:
-Moving as a team
-When to scout? / techniques for giving beta to friends in the eddy
-Portaging efficiently as a team
-How to set support for teammates
-Boofing
-micro-eddies/ pocket eddies
-boat scouting
-seal launching
-reading steeper rapids
-and much much more…
Click the link for more info…

Advanced Creeking Clinic:   Jan 26th, 2014
We will establish a team dynamic and asses the students while laying some ground work and foundational skills in the beginning.  As the day progresses, we will explore a range of topics based on the needs of the students while running the river as a team.

We will be working on a Grade IV river (East Fork Lewis sunset falls run, Opal Creek, and Canyon Creek are all possibilities).  We will be on one of these gems within a couple hours of PortlandOregon.
Click the link for more info…

The main benefit to taking the course is improving your understanding of paddling technique and theory, so you can paddle more efficiently and teach more effectively.  A secondary benefit is the development process which can give you structured feedback on becoming an effective instructor.  A third benefit are the significant insurance, liability, and networking benefits of ACA certification.  Instructor development workshops are very rewarding and enjoyable, because of the opportunity for idea exchange.

Sending; In Her Words

The women loving a big wave session
About two years ago I started Send It, ME.  That's about the same time I met a group of women boaters from Bowdoin College who were just starting to get their creeking wings on classics like Sandy Stream.  Later on, other women joined this group, some Bowdoin alumni and others from NH.  As of recent these women have developed into a formidable crew - tackling all sorts of runs, falls, races and big waves.  I'm pretty honored to know these women, and am excited to share what they have to offer.

The Brah's are Jane Koopman, Becca Austin, Leanne Bernier , Kit Hamely (photos) and Margaret Williams and here's what the have to say.

Whitewater Parks International (WPI) to Design World’s Newest Whitewater Stadium

Dual course design is a specialty of WPI and was successfully deployed in the 2012 London Olympic whitewater venue, also designed by the firm.

An aerial view of the WPI-designed London Olympic whitewater venue.

"Now that the project is fully funded and ready to move forward, we're honored to have the opportunity to work with an exceptionally capable and dedicated team in creating what is poised to become one or the world's most unique whitewater experiences.

Whitewater Parks International (WPI), has been awarded the design contract for creating the "River Rush" and "Tamariki River" courses as part of the new Wero Project in Manukau (Auckland), New Zealand.
The project will be another first-of-its-kind for WPI - combining a international level canoe/kayak venue with a state-of-the-art educational/ cultural events center.

One of the main missions of the Wero Project is to serve New Zealand's youth, aiming to host over 45,000 school children each year in sports, educational and cultural activities.

The whitewater component of the Wero Project consists of two separate courses - a Class III-IV recreation and competition channel, as well as a Class II-III training and instructional channel. This dual course design is a specialty of WPI and was successfully deployed in the 2012 London Olympic whitewater venue, also designed by the firm.

Kayaking 2012 – The Year In Review

The year 2012 for whitewater kayaking is one to remember. It started in awe with the successful first descent of the infamous Inga rapids on the Congo River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, likely the biggest rapids yet to be paddled. The film, Grand Inga Project (soon available on Epictv.com) has already won countless awards including Best Film at the X Dance film festival.

2012 is also the year that saw Spanish paddler Aniol Serrasolses push new levels of extreme paddling with countless stunts throughout the year. His peak demonstration was at the Voss Extreme Week in Norway where he ruled the whole event with incredible runs, even introducing downriver freestyle on 60+ ft waterfalls. Outstanding.
View here one of Aniol’s reel for 2012…

“Sacagawea is one of the ultimate female explorers. She not only covered vast distances, but also brought together cultures and made it possible for others to explore deep into a new world.” Sacagawea played a crucial role in the success of one of America’s most important exploratory endeavors. While her contributions were invaluable to the mission, she demonstrated to the world that females do have an important role in exploration. This expedition pays homage to Sacagawea and keeps her legend alive for the generations of adventurous women to come.

This Sunday August 25th, Next Adventure has asked me to head to Pacific City with as many boats, boards, etc as I can fit on a van and trailer. Ever wondered about surf boating? Waving and Caving in a long boat? Want to try out a SUP? What's up with them crazy new-fangled pedal fishing kayaks? What's your "etc"?
Next Adventure staffers and volunteers will be running informal clinics based on what you want to see, staffers will be hanging out, asking questions, striking poses in neoprene...you know, a beach day.
If there's something in particular you'd like to try out, email PSC@nextadventure.net or call 503-233-0706 x2 and they'll see what they can do. There may even by space in their van, if you're "flexible" as to departure/return times. Email PSC with questions.

Yours in pulling it together at the last minute,

A rare glimpse of the upper Chetco

4-day journey is far from a leisurely float downstream

Nestled in the southwest corner of Oregon lies the Chetco River, a remarkably clear stream with hints of emerald green, known for 50-pound salmon and described by many as one of the last places to experience a truly wild and remote river trip as its upper reaches cut through the heart of the Kalmiopsis Wilderness.
Because of its little-known nature and difficult access, only two river outfitters have ever offered trips on the National Wild and Scenic Chetco River, with the latest company, Northwest Rafting Company, just completing its inaugural commercial trip this summer.
“There are very few places left like the Chetco where you just won’t see anybody else there,” said Zach Collier, co-owner of Northwest Rafting Company, who worked tirelessly to get the first commercial permit for the river in more than 10 years. Northwest’s trip was rated as one of the top 10 new travel adventure trips of 2013 in the entire world by USA Today — the only American trip on the list.

Northwest’s four-day Chetco trip is not for those who enjoy an easy river trip.
Serene paddling through calm, mesmerizingly clear, deep pools is common and maybe the most rewarding part of the trip, but the pools are divided by many shallow riffles that require paddlers to hop out and drag, push or pull their boats while carefully walking the rocky river bed.
“It’s not even really whitewater. It’s traversing these narrow slots and chutes and walking around rapids,” Collier said. “It’s almost like half canyoneering and half river running.”

There were heroes out on the river yesterday. Heroes voluntarily working to make the world a better place.

Slalom courses offer paddlers the opportunity to improve their game in many ways:

1) Observe and Plan. At a slalom course you can observe other paddlers, their lines and their stroke sequences, and observe their success, or failure, to make a line you might be considering.

2) Execute. At a slalom course you can perfect stroke sequences on river maneuvers and measure your success to the inch.

3) Intuit. Slalom courses improve river reading skills. The courses allow paddlers to practice the same maneuver repeatedly and experience the subtle differences in current that affect the success of the move.

4) Extend. The courses require moves that you wouldn't choose on your own. Most paddlers develop a style that prefers a left or right move depending on their strong side. Slalom course designers balance their designs to include many unique moves in a rapid.

The heroes yesterday were the people sloshing in the river building the new rapid on the Clackamas now known as the Roaring River Slalom. They gave up a summer Sunday of paddling to build a practice area for the paddling community. You can honor their effort by simply paddling the new rapid this week.

Rufus Knapp, just returned from the World Masters Games in Italy,http://www.sportscene.tv/whitewater/canoe-slalom/news/canoe-slalom-at-the-torino-world-masters-games, designed the course and spent all day supervising, pulling wires, and setting 13 of the 25 gates he plans for this year's course. So far the course is doable by all levels of paddlers. This includes IK's, kayaks, and canoes. Sea kayaks are too long for maneuvering among the rocks at the river's low level this summer, and the gates are too narrow for paddle rafts.

Patrick McCarty, Irene Smith, Sam Drevo, Hutch and son Spencer, Dee B, Cheri and daughter, Sam's intern, all pitched in as a skeleton crew labored to make a new rapid.

This could be your last chance to experience kayak/canoe slalom in our area for some time. This will be the 7th year of the event, but the organizers are not planning to continue, your last chance to win a Gnarly Trophy on Sunday, August 25.

The event is planned for this weekend, 24. 25. There will be a slalom clinic on Saturdaywith expert slalom racers coaching recreational paddlers under the direction of Paul Kuthe. This is the best day to practice and learn. Sunday will be the race which transforms the class 2 rapid into a heart pounding adrenalin rush. The clinic fee of $20 (plus $5 for ACA insurance) covers the timed runs on Sunday. Contact Paul at Alder Creek to register, or register for both the clinic and the slalom on Saturday morning by contacting Lisa Day at the slalom course.

The course is free and open to all through this week. The course is just downstream of the Roaring River rapid on the Clackamas passing through two class 2 rapids. Launch at the put in at the Roaring River Campground sign and take out ¼ mile downstream for the newest, most exciting rapid around right now. If you do make it, the green gates are passed going downstream, and the red gates require you to pass through going upstream.

The course will be completed this Friday. If you have the time to help with that effort please contact Carl Poston, 971-222-6940.

There are only 3 National Parks that don't allow paddling on their rivers. GASP! Hopefully Yosemite will be the first to change that. Read my article in Adventure Sports Journal below for more info and cross your fingers that things change this fall!
(and yes, there is a tiny section of the Merced that you can paddle, but this would open up the entire Yosemite Valley and more!)

Below is an excerpt from a video post; great overview of San Joaquin...

The Upper North-Fork of the San Joaquin flows through the Ansel Adams Wilderness area in the Californian High Sierra just south of Yosemite National Park. A tributary of the famed Devils Postpile section, this section of river sports some absolutely stunning scenery and classic, quality whitewater. Our team concluded that his seemingly rarely run section, was one of the best overnight paddling trips of the Sierra season. A massively underrated section which, though you have to work hard for it, will greatly reward you for your efforts! The team hiked 11miles to the put in, paddled 6 miles on the river, and hiked a further 3 miles to the take out over the course of 3 days. Trip of a lifetime with the best crew possible.

Trinity Water Injunction Extended

POSTED BY  ON THU, AUG 15, 2013 AT 3:51 PM

Klamath and Trinity salmon got another potential setback today, as a federal judge extended a hold on releasing extra water down the Trinity River.

Originally scheduled for Tuesday, the release was stopped after Central Valley irrigators sued the Bureau of Reclamation, which controls the flow of water from the Trinity Reservoir.

The judge extended a hearing until Aug. 21, more than a week after extra flows were to begin. The Bureau of Reclamation now has to prove more water will help prevent disease from killing off a large run of chinook salmon.

    WWGP Stage 5: Futaleufu Marathon

    The Marathon
The official video: WWGP Stage 5: Whitewater Marathon

The marathon was the final race of the Grand Prix. It was a mass start race held on the Futalafu river on a longer run that included the section we raced for stage 4.

This was my personal favorite race of the event. I think that it was a favorite of a lot of racers. This race was held on the Bridge to Bridge section plus two big rapids below: Mas o Menos and Casa de Piedras, and was very very physically challenging. The race was 25ish minutes of paddling hard through nonstop big water. The water level was very high. If you swam it would not be good because you'd be swimming for a while before you could get yourself to shore. The women set safety along the run for the men and then the men set safety for the women. What was neat about this event was that it was a mass start and that you knew who you had to beat to change your overall standings. To keep my fifth place spot I had to beat Louise Jull and Nicole Mansfield. The mass start made the first rapid crazy. I watched 20+ men go through the first rapid at once and it was a mosh pit! During our race of just seven women I ended up getting hit in the nose by the stern of Martina's boat. For most of the race Louise Jull and I swapped between fourth and fifth. I clinched fourth in the last rapid by greasing a more aggressive faster line through the middle right. It was really fun to push yourself with another racer right beside, behind or ahead of you. At the end of the day, I was exhausted and had a smile on my face.

Mining Up Here Would Affect The Purity Of The Smith River! Which Is One Of The Cleanest Rivers In The World!

Baldface Creek | Northwest Rafting Company
I first encountered Baldface Creek ten years ago while paddling down the upper North Fork of the Smith River in Oregon. Near the end of a long rainy day of paddling we stopped across from its confluence and marveled in the sheer beauty of this creek....

Pigeon Point Camp-out on the Trinity! May 18-19! Time to get together for two days of paddling, dining, socializing, and camping! I am reserving the group campsite from USFS for Shasta Paddlers, both old and new clubs! I will also be buying beer, charcoal and etc. $$$ are coming from old club treasury.

Nearby paddling includes class I, II, III, and IV(V) runs and a surf wave at the camp. More details later and a poll asking who is going so I can estimate fluid consumption. Good opportunity to get some mentoring and meet new paddling buds.
